Romeo, Benvolio, Mercutio and a group of other friends make their way to Capulet's house, where they plan to enter the masquerade unannounced and stay for a single dance. Romeo mourns his unrequited love, and Mercutio delivers an imaginative speech on Queen Mab, who brings strange dreams to mankind. As Romeo and his friends prepare to enter the Capulet's party, Romeo has a premonition of coming troubles.

At the masquerade, Romeo sees Juliet and, struck by her beauty, falls in love immediately. Tybalt recognizes Romeo's voice and wants to fight him, but Capulet steps in to prevent a brawl. Romeo and Juliet talk, and he kisses her. The Nurse informs each young lover of the other's family name.
